Troubleshooting guide
Dolphin filter not fitting properly
Double-check before purchasing
- Filter part numbers and housing latch designs vary between Dolphin model families — always verify compatibility before purchasing a replacement.
The Problem
A Dolphin filter that does not seat correctly will reduce suction, allow debris to bypass the mesh, and may cause the filter full indicator to trigger prematurely. The most common causes are an incompatible replacement filter or a damaged filter housing.
Steps
- 1
Remove the filter and check the part number on the frame. Compare it to the compatible filter list for your specific Dolphin model number.
💡 Your model number is usually on a sticker on the robot underside or in the user manual.
- 2
Inspect the filter housing for debris or scale buildup around the seating rim. Rinse the bay under running water to clear any obstruction.
- 3
Reinstall the filter. Press firmly and evenly on both sides simultaneously until you feel or hear it click into the retaining tabs.
- 4
Check the retaining tabs or clips in the housing. Inspect for cracks or breakage — a broken tab cannot hold the filter in place.
- 5
If the filter is the correct model and the housing tabs are intact but the filter still does not seat, inspect the filter frame for warping or cracks.
- 6
If the housing or filter frame is damaged, order a replacement. Do not run the robot with an unseated filter — suction performance will be very poor.
Possible Causes & Solutions
Replacement filter is the wrong model or mesh grade
Dolphin filters are model-specific. A filter designed for an M400 will not correctly seat in an E10 or Nautilus CC. Verify the part number against your robot's model number before purchasing.
Filter not fully pressed into its housing
Filters need a firm press to click into their latching tabs. A partially seated filter rocks or lifts slightly at one edge. Remove and reinstall, pressing firmly and evenly until you feel it seat.
Filter housing tabs or clips are broken
The plastic tabs that retain the filter can crack, especially in cold temperatures. If the filter cannot latch, inspect the housing clips. A broken housing will need replacement.
Debris or scale buildup in the filter housing preventing full seating
Mineral scale and compacted debris can build up around the filter bay, preventing the filter from seating. Rinse the filter bay thoroughly and check for buildup around the seating surface.
Filter mesh swollen or warped after being left in the sun
Plastic filter frames can distort if left in direct sunlight for extended periods. Store filters in a shaded location when not in use.
When to Replace
Replace the filter when the frame is cracked or warped. Replace the filter housing if the retaining tabs are broken. Use only the correct model-specific filter to avoid fit issues.

Model-specific. Always verify the part number against your robot's model number — E10, M400, M600, and Nautilus CC filters are not interchangeable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my new replacement filter not fitting?
It is most likely the wrong model. Dolphin filter baskets look similar but have model-specific dimensions and latch designs. Check the part number and cross-reference it with your robot's model number.
Can I run my Dolphin with the filter slightly unseated?
No. An unseated filter creates a bypass gap. Debris passes around the mesh directly into the impeller and back into the pool. Always confirm the filter is fully seated before each run.
The filter housing tabs are broken — can I still use the robot?
Not effectively. Without the tabs, the filter cannot stay sealed during the cycle. A new filter housing is the correct fix — running without a correctly latched filter will leave the pool dirty.
