Troubleshooting guide
Dolphin weak suction
The Problem
Weak suction on a Dolphin robot is almost always caused by a restricted flow path — a full or improperly seated filter, a blocked impeller, or a degraded filter mesh that no longer holds debris. Suction issues are easy to diagnose and usually resolve after cleaning.
Steps
- 1
Remove the filter basket and rinse it thoroughly under running water. Hold it up to the light and inspect the mesh for holes or tears.
- 2
Reinstall the filter and press it firmly into its housing until it clicks or seats fully. Confirm there are no gaps around the edge.
- 3
With the filter removed, look into the filter bay and check the impeller area for packed debris. Clear any blockage with running water.
- 4
Run the robot on a completely clean filter and observe suction performance. If suction is still weak, the impeller may be damaged.
- 5
Inspect the impeller blades for cracks, chips, or missing sections. If the impeller is damaged, it will need replacement.
- 6
Contact Maytronics support if suction remains weak with a clean, seated filter and an undamaged impeller — a pump motor issue may be present.
Possible Causes & Solutions
Filter basket is full, restricting water flow
A filter that is more than half full significantly reduces flow through the impeller. Remove, rinse, and reinstall the filter. Run the robot on a clean filter for a cycle and compare suction.
Filter mesh torn or degraded, reducing capture efficiency
A torn mesh lets fine debris pass through rather than being captured, so the filter fills less but debris passes back into the pool. Inspect the mesh in bright light — small holes let light through.
Filter not correctly seated, creating a bypass gap
If the filter is not fully clicked into its housing, water bypasses the mesh rather than being drawn through it. Suction drops sharply. Remove and reseat the filter until it locks in place.
Impeller blocked with compacted debris
Leaves and hair can compact around the impeller blades and prevent them from spinning at full speed. Remove the filter and clear the impeller area with running water or a narrow brush.
Impeller vanes broken or worn
Physical damage to the impeller vanes reduces the flow rate they can generate. Inspect the impeller for cracks or missing vanes — the impeller assembly will need replacement if damaged.
When to Replace
Replace the filter when the mesh is torn or when suction does not recover after thorough cleaning. Replace the impeller assembly if blades are cracked or missing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I test if my Dolphin has weak suction?
Hold your hand about 3cm below the water inlet on the underside of the robot. You should feel noticeable suction pulling your hand toward the inlet. Weak or no pull indicates a restriction.
Will a dirty filter always cause weak suction?
Yes. Even a filter that looks partially clean can restrict flow enough to cut suction by 30–50%. Clean the filter after every use.
Can I upgrade to a finer mesh filter to improve debris capture?
Yes, but be aware that fine and ultra-fine mesh filters block faster than standard mesh. You may need to clean the filter more frequently if you upgrade.
