Dolphin tracks not moving

Double-check before purchasing

  • Track removal and drive belt access varies between Dolphin model families — consult your model-specific manual.

The Problem

Dolphin tracks that have stopped moving prevent the robot from driving and cleaning. The cause is almost always a mechanical fault — debris caught in the track system, a broken drive belt, or a motor issue — rather than an electrical problem.

Steps

  1. 1

Remove the robot from the pool and flip it over. Manually push each track forward and backward to check for resistance.

  2. 2

Inspect the track tread for debris caught in the grooves or around the sprocket teeth. Clear everything thoroughly.

💡 Use a toothpick or narrow screwdriver to extract debris from between track segments.

  3. 3

Check that the track is seated correctly on both the front and rear sprockets. Re-seat it if it has partially detached.

  4. 4

Inspect the drive belt connecting the motor to the track sprocket. Replace if broken, cracked, or slack.

  5. 5

After clearing debris and inspecting the belt, move each track by hand again. It should run smoothly across both sprockets.

  6. 6

If the track moves freely by hand but does not drive during operation, contact Maytronics support — a motor or control board diagnosis may be needed.

Possible Causes & Solutions

common

Debris jammed in the track tread or around the track drive sprocket

Flip the robot and manually move each track. Look for leaves, hair, or small stones caught in the tread or drive sprocket. Clear all debris before testing again.

common

Drive belt for the track has snapped or slipped

The drive belt connects the motor to the track. A broken or slipped belt means the motor runs but the track does not move. Access the belt via the side panel and replace if needed.

occasional

Track assembly dislodged or misaligned

On some models, the track can partially detach from its sprocket if debris catches it during operation. Re-seat the track and check that it runs on both sprockets correctly.

occasional

Worn track losing grip on the drive sprocket

Tracks wear over time. When the track teeth wear down they slip on the sprocket instead of gripping. Replace the track assembly.

rare

Drive motor for the track has failed

If the belt is intact, the track is properly seated, and there is no debris blockage, the drive motor may have failed. Contact Maytronics support.

When to Replace

Replace tracks when the tread shows significant wear or when the track slips on the drive sprocket despite being correctly seated. Replace drive belts when broken or stretched.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run my Dolphin if only one track moves?

No. With only one track driving, the robot will spin in circles and clean poorly. Fix the faulty track before running the robot.

How long do Dolphin tracks last?

With regular cleaning and off-season storage, tracks typically last 3–5 seasons. Running the robot in pools with heavy leaf debris or rough plaster accelerates wear.

My tracks look fine but still do not move — what is the cause?

If the tracks are clear of debris and correctly seated but do not drive, the fault is likely in the drive belt or motor. Inspect the belt first — it is the cheaper and easier fix.
