Dolphin pool robot brushes not spinning

dolphin

Double-check before purchasing

  • Brush motor access and replacement procedure varies by Dolphin model — contact Maytronics support before attempting motor-level repairs.

The Problem

When Dolphin brushes stop spinning, the robot drives around the pool but cleans poorly — debris is not being scrubbed loose. The cause is usually mechanical: debris wrapped around the brush shaft, or a broken drive belt.

Steps

  1. 1

Remove the brush assembly. On most Dolphin models, the brushes slide or click out without tools.

  2. 2

Inspect the brush shaft closely. Use scissors to cut away any hair, string, or root material wrapped around it.

💡 Hair wraps can be very tight and look like part of the shaft. Feel along the shaft with your fingers.

  3. 3

Spin the brush by hand. It should rotate smoothly with minimal resistance. Grinding or stiffness indicates worn bearings or embedded debris.

  4. 4

Check the drive belt that connects the motor to the brush. Replace it if broken, stretched, or missing.

💡 Keep a spare belt on hand — they are inexpensive and a common failure point.

  5. 5

Reinstall the brush and ensure it clicks or locks fully into position.

  6. 6

Run the robot briefly on a wet surface and confirm the brushes spin. If they remain stationary with a good belt and clean shaft, the brush motor may have failed.

Possible Causes & Solutions

common

Hair or debris wrapped tightly around the brush shaft

Remove the brush assembly and inspect the shaft closely. Hair and fine roots often wrap tightly and are not obvious without close inspection. Cut away with scissors.

common

Brush drive belt has snapped or slipped off its pulley

If the robot drives normally but the brushes do not move at all, a broken or slipped belt is the most likely cause. Access the belt by removing the brush assembly.

occasional

Brush assembly not fully seated or locked after cleaning

A brush that is slightly misaligned may spin freely by hand but bind when the robot is in the water under load. Reinstall and ensure it clicks or locks fully into its housing.

occasional

Worn brush bearings creating friction under load

If the brush spins freely by hand but stalls during a cycle, worn bearings are the likely cause. Replace the brush assembly.

rare

Brush motor has failed

If the belt is intact, shaft is clear, and the assembly is correctly seated but brushes still do not spin, the brush motor may have failed. Contact Maytronics support.

When to Replace

Replace brushes when bristles or rubber fins are visibly worn, flattened, or shorter than half their original height. Replace the drive belt if broken or stretched.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if the belt is broken without full disassembly?

If the robot drives normally and the tracks spin fine but brushes do not move at all, a broken or slipped belt is the most likely cause. Remove the brush assembly to confirm.

Can I run my Dolphin temporarily without brushes spinning?

The robot will still move and filter water, but cleaning performance drops significantly. Debris will not be scrubbed off pool surfaces for the suction system to capture.

How often should I check the brush shaft for hair buildup?

Check every few weeks during active pool season. Inspect the shaft each time you clean the filter — hair wraps accumulate quietly and are easy to miss.
