Dolphin pool robot falls off wall mid climb

dolphin

Double-check before purchasing

  • Recommended water level varies by model — consult your model-specific manual for the correct range.
  • Motor assessment for wall-climbing failure requires a Maytronics service centre.

The Problem

When a Dolphin starts climbing but slides back down mid-wall, the robot is losing grip or suction before reaching the waterline. Wall climbing relies on three things working together: suction, brush traction, and sufficient cable slack. All three are worth checking before assuming a mechanical fault.

Steps

  1. 1

Clean the filter thoroughly before attempting another wall-climbing cycle.

💡 A half-full filter is enough to prevent wall climbing on some models — clean it even if it does not look completely full.

  2. 2

Inspect the brushes. Replace if bristles are flattened or rubber fins are worn thin.

  3. 3

Manually brush the pool walls before running the robot if algae or slime is present.

  4. 4

Straighten the cable and confirm there is enough slack for the robot to reach the far wall without the cable going taut during the climbing phase.

  5. 5

Check the water level and compare it to your model's recommended operating level.

  6. 6

Run a floor-only cycle to confirm normal floor performance. If the robot performs well on the floor but consistently fails on walls, the issue is specific to wall traction and suction.

Possible Causes & Solutions

common

Clogged filter reducing suction against the wall

A packed filter directly reduces the suction force that holds the robot against the wall surface. Clean the filter before every wall-climbing cycle.

common

Worn brushes with insufficient grip on the wall surface

Worn or smooth brushes cannot generate enough traction on vertical surfaces. Inspect bristles and rubber fins — replace if flattened or worn thin.

occasional

Algae or biofilm on the pool wall creating a slippery surface

Manually brush the pool walls before running the robot. Algae and biofilm create a slick layer that even new brushes struggle to grip.

occasional

Cable under tension pulling the robot off the wall

Ensure there is enough slack in the cable for the robot to reach the far wall without the cable going taut. Cable tension is a common and overlooked cause of wall falls.

occasional

Water level outside the robot operating range

Water too low may cause the robot to lose suction above the waterline. Water too high may prevent it reaching the wall-floor transition cleanly. Check against your model's recommended level.

rare

Drive or pump motors weakening over time

If all surface conditions and cable factors are ruled out, aging motors may no longer generate enough force for vertical movement. Contact Maytronics support.

When to Replace

Replace brushes when bristles or rubber fins show visible wear. If clean filter, fresh brushes, clean walls, and correct water level still result in wall-climbing failure, motor assessment by a Maytronics service centre is the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my Dolphin be able to clean all the way to the waterline?

Most wall-climbing Dolphin models are designed to clean up to the waterline. Consistent falls short of the waterline usually point to the filter, brushes, or water level rather than a navigation fault.

Does pool surface type affect wall-climbing performance?

Yes. Textured plaster and pebble surfaces give more grip than smooth tile, fiberglass, or vinyl. On very smooth surfaces, clean brushes and a clean filter are even more critical.

Can I disable wall climbing if I do not need it?

Some Dolphin models offer a floor-only cleaning mode via the remote or MyDolphin app. Running floor-only reduces brush wear and extends cycle life.
